Galata Jewish District – A Living Chapter of Istanbul’s Jewish Heritage

The Galata district, today known mainly as Karaköy and parts of Beyoğlu, is one of the most important locations for understanding the Jewish history of Istanbul. For centuries, Galata was home to a vibrant Jewish community and played a central role in the religious, cultural, and commercial life of the city.

Following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, and especially after the arrival of Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in 1492, Galata became a major center of Jewish settlement. Its proximity to the port made it a thriving hub of trade, craftsmanship, banking, and intellectual life. Jewish families lived primarily around Kuledibi, beneath the Galata Tower, alongside Greek, Armenian, and European communities, creating one of the most cosmopolitan neighborhoods of the Ottoman capital.

Galata is home to some of Istanbul’s most significant Jewish landmarks. The Neve Shalom Synagogue, still active today, stands as a symbol of continuity and faith and is located next to the 500th Year Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews, which documents over five centuries of Jewish life in Anatolia. Nearby, the Ashkenazi Synagogue, the only active Ashkenazi synagogue in Istanbul, reflects the diversity within the Jewish community. The historic Zülfaris Synagogue, once a central synagogue of the area, now serves as a cultural and exhibition space.

One of Galata’s most iconic monuments, the Camondo Stairs, was commissioned by the influential Camondo family, prominent Jewish bankers and philanthropists who played a major role in the modernization of Ottoman finance and education. Their legacy is still visible in the architecture and urban fabric of the neighborhood.

Walking through Galata today offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the shared history of Jews and the Ottoman Empire, and to understand Istanbul’s long tradition of religious and cultural coexistence.
